Everyone’s career path is different.

Most people aspire to a job, then seek it out. But for Bob Collum, the job found him.

It was just over a year ago when Collum, a former airline pilot then employed as an instructor for FlightSafety, logged into his LinkedIn account and saw that Seth Roberts, an aviation recruiter from JetPro Pilots, was eager to contact him. Before long they were on the phone together and Roberts was describing a Gulfstream pilot position he thought someone with Collum’s background and qualifications might find interesting. Roberts was right.

“I’ve always been someone who’s open to new opportunities, and this sounded like a good one,” Collum recalls.

“What he was describing was something I’d always been fascinated with.” Roberts didn’t immediately disclose the name of the corporate client looking for a full-time pilot through the company’s JetPro Recruit program. But he soon set Collum up with a phone call from the client.

The contact was the Chief Pilot, and as soon as Collum identified himself, both realized they’d worked together before, when the Chief Pilot took training from Collum at FlightSafety. “The job’s yours if you want it,” Collum recalls him exclaiming as they celebrated the coincidental reunion, adding, “It was kind of amazing.” Collum signed on as a pilot in command for the client, flying ultra-long-range Gulfstream 280, 600 and 650 business jets worldwide.

In the year since, he has relocated to Pennsylvania from Jacksonville, Fla., which had been home base for much of his life following a stint in the Air Force and his GI Bill-assisted flight school at Comair Aviation Academy.

“I wasn’t looking for a job at the time,” Collum says of that pivotal phone connection made through JetPro. “But it was too good an opportunity to pass up.”
